Round trips to Namibia: safari, dunes, desert, and wide open spaces.

EXPLORING NAMIBIA.

WITH THE FREEDOM OF LIGHT AND COLORS.

Whether glittering or bizarre, wild or rich, Namibia is the name for grandiose nature and colors, paired with the silence and light that touches our souls. Where an endless horizon reflects everyone's freedom.

Experience animals, landscapes, adventures on your own, all of this finds its home in a country where spectacular views have grown naturally. Naturally original and with authentically friendly people. Feel a pleasant climate at any time of the year. Watch desert elephants in legendary national parks. Try Black Forest cake while taking in the immense wealth of nature.

Below are some suggestions for round trips through Namibia. They should inspire you to explore dunes, deserts and the vast expanse and, of course, to discover a safari in Etosha National Park or one of the many other parks.

Spend a wonderful vacation and discover our Namibia travel:

Traveling to Namibia — Questions and Answers

When is the best time to travel to Namibia?

Basically:

May to October (dry season) is the best time to travel to Namibia — clear air, little rain and excellent wildlife viewing, especially July—September around Etosha, when wild animals gather at the waterholes. In the Shouldertimes April/May and September/November It is often a bit quieter and photogenic, but already warmer (especially October).

By interest:

  • Safari/Etosha: ideal May—October, Peak July—September (top sightings, but high season). November—March Bring greenery, young animals & migratory birds — nice photos, but animals are more spread out.
  • Sossusvlei & Namib: Year-round. Suitable for soft lighting & moderate temperatures April—June and September—November; December—February can get very hot (avoid midday heat).
  • Coast (Swakopmund/Skeleton Coast): Fresh year round, frequent fog from the Benguela River; December—March often a little less wind/fog. Pack a warm layer.
  • Zambezi/Caprivi & North: April—October mostly pleasant and easy to drive on. In the rainy season December—April Is the risk of malaria increasing in northern regions — discuss prophylaxis individually with a doctor.

Planning tips:

  • Availability & prices: July—October = High season (book early). November—April = “Green Season” with fewer guests and sometimes cheaper rates.
  • heat: october Often very hot domestically — start activities early/in the evening.

What vaccinations/health advice applies to Namibia?

Basically:

Check/refresh standard vaccinations in accordance with STIKO (e.g. tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, polio, MMR, influenza). Hepatitis A is useful for almost all trips. yellow fever: no risk in the country; Vaccination certificate only requiredwhen entry from a yellow fever risk area completed (including transit > 12 hours).

Travel vaccinations depending on travel itinerary:
Hepatitis B (longer stays/medical risks), typhoid (rural/street food), rabies (animal contacts/outdoor).

Malaria:
Risk in particular in the north/northeast (e.g. Zambezi/Caprivi, Kavango, border areas); Center/South including Windhoek, Swakopmund, Namib/Sossusvlei mostly low to no risk. Clarify with a doctor whether chemoprophylaxis is necessary — in addition, consistent mosquito protection.

More notes:
More consistent Mosquito and sun protection, safe drinking water/food hygiene; Avoid fresh water (Schistosomiasis risk in affected waters).

Wichtiger Hinweis:

What are the entry requirements for Namibia?

Basically:

Since April 1, 2025, Germans, Austrians and Swiss citizens have had a visa requirement (visa on arrival or e-visa in advance).

  • Passport: valid for at least 6 months after arrival and 3 free pages.— Evidence may be required: return/onward flight, accommodation, sufficient funds, travel/health insurance.
  • Traveling with minors: A birth certificate or declaration of consent may be required.
  • Tip: Apply for e-visas in advance (faster than at the border); visa fee currently around NAD 1,600 (~EUR 80).

Wichtiger Hinweis:

How much is customary to tip in Namibia?

Basically:
Tips are welcome but optional. Many lodges have a shared tip box for the team. Preferred currencies: NAD (≈ ZAR), often USD in safari lodges. Check whether a service fee is already included.

Indicative values by service:

  • Restaurants/cafés: 10— 12% (up to 15% with excellent service).
  • Safari guide (game drives/private tour): 100-200 NAD per person/day.
  • Tracker/ Spotter: 50-100 NAD per person/day

  • Driver/transfers: 50-100 NAD per person (or 100-200 NAD per vehicle each way)
  • Hotel-Porter: 10-20 NAD per bag.
  • Housekeeping: 20-50 NAD per room/night

How good are mobile phone/internet connections in Namibia?

Basically:
In cities and larger towns (e.g. Windhoek, Swakopmund, Walvis Bay), there is usually solid 4G coverage. In rural and desert regions, reception fluctuates strongly; in very remote areas, there is often no network at all.

Details:

  • National Parks & Desert: In Etosha around Gates/Camps partly reception, in wide park areas and Sossusvlei/ Namib often no signal.
  • Speed: In cities, usually sufficient for navigation, social & video calls; often only 3G/Edge in rural areas.
  • SIM/eSIM: Local prepaid SIMs are cheap and widespread; eSIM partially available (depending on provider/shop).
  • WLAN: Many lodges/camps offer WiFi, sometimes time-limited or volume-limited; in very remote camps, often only weak or satellite-based Internet.

Practical tips:
Load offline maps, take dual SIM/Hotspot with you, have enough power bank/12 V charger with you. It is better to use cities/hotels for photo uploads & backups.

Hinweis:

What are the top highlights in Namibia for first-time visitors?

Basically:
Namibia delights with desert, coast, rocky landscapes and magnificent wildlife. For your first trip, we recommend a round of Namib Desert — Coast — Damaraland — Etosha — Central Namibia in 12-16 days.

Top highlights:

  • Sossusvlei & Deadvlei (Namib Desert): Dune giants such as “Big Daddy” and “Dune 45”, plus the Sesriem Canyon — best light early morning/late in the afternoon.
  • Etosha National Park: Excellent game viewing at the waterholes; plan game drives in the morning/evening.
  • Swakopmund & Walvis Bay: Atlantic meets dunes — desert tours (e.g. Sandwich Harbour), boat/kayak to seals & dolphins, quad/boarding in the Namib.
  • Damaraland: Twyfelfontein (rock engravings, UNESCO), Spitzkoppe and Brandberg; luckily elephants/rhinos adapted to the desert.
  • Skeleton Coast & Cape Cross: Fog, space, wrecks and a huge Seal colony — impressive coastal atmosphere.
  • Lüderitz & Kolmanskop: colorful colonial architecture and Ghost Town in the desert (endless photo opportunities).
  • Fish River Canyon: Gigantic canyon landscape with spectacular viewpoints (requires extra detour or more travel days).
  • Waterberg Plateau & Okonjima: Hikes with a view, experience nature; in Okonjima, insights into conservation projects (e.g. cheetahs).
  • Zambezi region (Caprivi): River safaris, birdlife and national parks — ideal as an extension to Victoria Falls.
  • NamibRand & starry sky: Hardly any light pollution — perfect conditions for night photography.

Sample itinerary (12-16 days):
Windhoek — Sossusvlei (2-3 nights)Swakopmund (2—3)Damaraland (1—2)Etosha (3-4)Okonjima/Waterberg (1—2) — Windhoek.

Practical tips:

  • Avoid activities in the heat: sunrise/sunset Plan for it.
  • Reserve in advance (especially July—October).
  • Travel times Calculate realistically; gravel roads slowly and defensively.
  • For more remote destinations SUV/4×4 useful; always carry enough water & fuel.
  • drone rules and Parking/Permits Observe locally.

How much money should I budget per day for food, fuel, etc. in Namibia?

Basically:
Namibia is moderate when it comes to food, depending on distance and vehicle when it comes to fuel (SUV/4×4 consumes significantly more). Large stages drive up daily costs.

Food & drink (p. p./day):
cca 250 — 500 NAD with a mix of restaurant & snacks (self-catering rather cheaper, restaurant rather more expensive throughout).

Refueling (per vehicle/day):
indicative value 2.5—4 NAD per km (SUV/4×4; car rather 1.8—3 NAD/km).
example: 200 km day stage ⇒ 500—800 NAD (SUV).

Other (per day):
50-150 NAD (water, snacks, parking, small errands).

Optional activities/admissions:
Parking/permits and guided activities vary greatly from region to region; roughly 300-1,500 NAD p. p. per activity.

When is the best time to observe animals in Namibia?

Basically:
dry season May—October = best sightings (waterholes). “Green Season” Nov—March = Young animals, migratory birds, green landscape — animals are more dispersed.

By region/type:

  • Etosha: Top July—October (large clusters of waterholes). Nov—Dec: many young animals; Nov—March: strong birding.
  • Damaraland/Kaokoveld: desert elephants/rhinos year round, in the dry season more concentrated on rivers; sightings with an experienced guide are best.
  • Coast (Swakopmund/Walvis Bay): Dolphins & seals mostly year round; Baby seals At Cape Cross, for example Nov—Dec. Flamingos vary seasonally.
  • Zambezi region (Caprivi): Boat/river safari year round, very good Jun—Oct; Birding Nov—March.
  • Namib/Sossusvlei: Oryx, springboks & smaller desert dwellers year round, most active morning/evening.

practice:
Drive early & late, allow for lunch time; remain patient at waterholes.

Hinweis:

How safe is Namibia for individual travellers ?

Basically:
Namibia is considered easy to travel on classic routes. The biggest risks are traffic (dirt roads, wildlife) and occasional theft in cities. With a defensive driving style and healthy safety habits, most people travel easily on an individual basis.

Most common risks & practical tips:

  • Drive: Avoid driving at night; slow, long distances on gravel; beware of animal crossings.
  • Cities (e.g. Windhoek, Swakopmund): Carry valuables invisibly, park the car empty, only guarded parking spaces.
  • Money/ATMs: Withdraw from malls/bank counters; shield PIN.
  • Network & help: Outside cities, there is often little reception — share the route, have water/emergency numbers with you.
  • Accommodation & lodges: Observe safari rules; do not feed/approach animals.
  • Refuel: Plan the range; never travel “on reserve” to remote areas.
  • documents: Driving licence/passport copy/rental agreement at hand; remain friendly during checks.

Allgemeine Hinweise:
