Day by day: itinerary

Highlights of Namibia with tent and lodge

DAY 1: WINDHOEK – NA'AN KU SÊ LODGE

(approx. 45 km / approx. 00:45 hours driving time)

Your journey begins with a gentle start: after arriving at Windhoek Airport, pick up your rental car and enjoy a short drive through open savanna landscapes to the Na’an ku Sê Lodge, an oasis of tranquility on the edge of the central Namibian wilderness. Surrounded by golden grasslands and hills dotted with umbrella thorn acacias, the lodge offers a stylish atmosphere and insights into the work of the Na’an ku Sê Foundation, which is dedicated to protecting Namibia's wildlife and supporting local communities.

Take a stroll around the grounds or enjoy a refreshing dip in the pool to soak up the African spirit. The lodge is home to a unique wildlife sanctuary – if you're interested, you can join an exciting predator feeding session or learn more about local conservation efforts. In the evening, enjoy a stylish dinner on the terrace while watching the sunset, accompanied by the calls of guinea fowl – the perfect start to your self-drive Namibia tour.

DAY 2: NA'AN KU SÊ – OKONJIMA NATURE RESERVE

(approx. 250 km / approx. 03:00 hours driving time)

After breakfast, head north through the central highlands. The landscape opens up into wide valleys with grassy pastures, occasionally broken by termite mounds and acacia trees. Along the way, we recommend a stop in Okahandja, famous for its lively woodcarving market featuring intricately crafted souvenirs.

In the early afternoon, you will reach the Okonjima Plains Camp, nestled in the vast wilderness of the nature reserve of the same name. The history of this former farmland is now intertwined with the commitment of the AfriCat Foundation to the protection of cheetahs and leopards.

In the late afternoon, head out on your first game drive: with a bit of luck, you will track down one of these elegant hunters – a thrilling experience that adds an impressive wildlife dimension to your self-drive Namibia tour.

DAY 3: OKONJIMA – ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK / HALALI

(approx. 270 km / approx. 3.5 hours driving time)

A day for animal lovers: After breakfast, continue your journey towards the legendary Etosha National Park, where shimmering salt pans and vast savannas provide a habitat for spectacular wildlife. As soon as you pass through Anderson Gate, the stage is set for incredible game viewing.

You will drive through the park at your own pace on your way to the centrally located Halali Campsite, a charming spot nestled between granite outcrops and mopane trees. Halali is famous for its floodlit waterhole—a true hidden gem where you can experience rhinos, elephants, or perhaps even a leopard up close in the silence of the night, completely at your own leisure.

An early self-catered dinner and a sunset over the vast African landscape provide the perfect end to the day.

DAY 4: HALALI – OKAUKUEJO CAMP

(Game drive in Etosha, approx. 80 km / approx. 1.5 hours driving time without stops)

Today, take a leisurely drive west from Halali, crossing through the heart of Etosha National Park. This leg of the journey doubles as an extended safari: along the way, you will pass numerous waterholes—popular gathering spots for antelopes, zebras, giraffes, and big cats. Every hour in the vehicle offers a window into the wilderness.

In the early afternoon, you will arrive at the historic Okaukuejo Camp, located directly at one of the park's most impressive permanent waterholes. Especially during the twilight hours, herds of elephants, rhinos, and lions gather here—a spectacle you can enjoy in complete tranquility from the elevated observation deck.

If you like, you can join a guided night safari today (optional, bookable on-site)—an adventure for those who want to experience the wildlife even after the sun goes down.

DAY 5: OKAUKUEJO – TWYFELFONTEIN (MOWANI CAMPSITE)

(approx. 320 km / approx. 4.5 hours driving time)

You will leave Etosha National Park in the morning, heading southwest through the hilly Damaraland—one of Namibia's most scenic regions. Along the way, there are opportunities to stop at small villages and viewpoints. A detour to the petrified trees of the "Petrified Forest" or a visit to the Damara Living Museum offers fascinating insights into the region's culture.

In the afternoon, you will reach the picturesquely situated Mowani Campsite, nestled between massive granite boulders. The view over the rugged surrounding landscape is breathtaking. We recommend a short walk here at sunset—perhaps accompanied by a cold drink—or simply pausing to take in the soft desert light.

Not far from your camp lies one of Namibia's most significant UNESCO World Heritage sites: Twyfelfontein, a unique collection of prehistoric rock engravings once carved into the red sandstone by San hunters. A guided tour allows you to immerse yourself in the symbolic world of this early rock art—mysterious and deeply connected to the landscape.

DAY 6: TWYFELFONTEIN – SWAKOPMUND

(approx. 330 km / approx. 5 hours driving time)

Today you bid farewell to the warm earth tones of Damaraland and continue your journey westward—a day defined by changing landscapes. The route takes you through endless expanses, past table mountains, dry riverbeds, and small settlements such as Uis, where a short stopover is well worth it – not least for the view of the imposing Brandberg, Namibia's highest mountain.

The closer you get to the coast, the cooler the climate becomes. Reaching the Atlantic coast opens up a whole new horizon: Swakopmund, a charming coastal town with colonial flair and a maritime character, welcomes you with a fresh sea breeze and vibrant city life.

Your stylish accommodation at The Sea Boutique Guesthouse is located right on the ocean – perfect for an initial stroll along the promenade or a relaxed arrival with a view of the sea. Swakopmund offers a contrast to the solitude of Damaraland – urban, lively, yet tranquil.

DAY 7: SWAKOPMUND

Today is all about your personal interests – Swakopmund is tailor-made for individual experiences. You have the choice between active adventures and cultural discoveries.

How about a catamaran cruise in Walvis Bay, where dolphins playfully accompany the boat and seals jump on board? Alternatively, a quad bike tour beckons or a sandboarding adventure into the golden dunes of the Namib – an adrenaline-filled experience against a spectacular backdrop.

For those who prefer a slower pace, visit the moon landscape south of the city, where the ancient Welwitschia plants grow – botanical marvels that can live up to 1,000 years. Alternatively, explore the old town with its German colonial architecture, visit galleries, and the well-worth-seeing Swakopmund Museum.

In the evening, we recommend dinner at one of the city's excellent restaurants – fresh-caught fish, game dishes, and Namibian wines provide the perfect culinary conclusion to this varied day.

DAY 8: SWAKOPMUND

A second day on the Atlantic coast opens up further opportunities for exploration. Perhaps you would like to take a guided township tour today, where you will gain insights into everyday life and the diversity of Namibia's cultures – a moving, eye-opening, and authentic experience.

A day trip to the seal colony at Cape Cross is also a great option: drive north along the rugged Skeleton Coast, where tens of thousands of fur seals gather along the shore – an impressive natural spectacle.

Alternatively, you can choose to relax and take it easy today. Swakopmund is home to many small cafés, bookstores, and boutiques perfect for browsing, and the long beach invites you for a leisurely stroll. Perhaps you might treat yourself to a spa treatment or simply enjoy a nice glass of wine while watching the waves.

DAY 9: SWAKOPMUND – SESRIEM (NAMIB DESERT)

(approx. 345 km / approx. 5.5 hours driving time)

After spending time on the coast, today you head back inland, immersing yourself in one of Namibia's most extraordinary landscapes: the Namib Desert. The route takes you along the sometimes adventurous gravel roads of the C14, passing endless plains, rugged rocks, and the lonely expanses of the Namib.

A popular stop is Solitaire, a quirky settlement in the middle of the desert, famous for its apple pie, vintage car wrecks, and a sense of absolute seclusion. Further south, the landscape gradually changes as sand dunes appear on the horizon and the light softens.

In the afternoon, you will reach the Sesriem Campsite, ideally located at the entrance to Sossusvlei. If you arrive early, you can take a side trip to the nearby Sesriem Canyon , a millennia-old gorge with impressive rock formations.

The sunset over the desert and the clear, starry sky are a natural spectacle in their own right—quiet, breathtaking, and truly poetic.

DAY 10: SESRIEM – NAUKLUFT MOUNTAINS (NAMIB-NAUKLUFT NATIONAL PARK)

(approx. 120 km / approx. 2 hours driving time)

You will set off before sunrise, because only those who head out early can experience the magic of the dune landscape of Sossusvlei in its full spectrum of color. The famous dunes Dune 45 and Big Daddy glow in deep red in the morning light – an incomparable sight.

After climbing one of the dunes – or taking a walk into the almost surreal Deadvlei, where dead camel thorn trees stand in white clay soil – you will return to your accommodation before the midday heat sets in.

Afterwards, you will continue east into the remote Naukluft Mountains – an often overlooked, scenically spectacular region with deep gorges, natural pools, and rare flora. Your simple but charming campsite is located in the middle of this ancient rocky landscape.

In the afternoon, there is time for a short hike along the riverbed or a refreshing dip in a rock pool – a quiet, pristine end to an intense day of travel.

DAY 11: NAUKLUFT – WINDHOEK

(approx. 240 km / approx. 3.5 hours driving time)

After the quiet moments in the rugged mountain landscape of the Naukluft , you will head towards the capital today. The drive takes you through the open expanses of the central Namibian highlands – past isolated farms, grazing kudus, and perhaps even a giraffe on the horizon.

Shortly before you arrive, it is worth making a stop in Rehoboth, a historic town of the Baster community, or simply pull over at a shady picnic spot to enjoy one last look at the Namibian bushveld.

Once you arrive in Windhoek , the stylish The Elegant Guesthouse awaits you in the leafy suburb of Klein Windhoek. Here, you can bring your trip to a relaxed close – whether with a stroll through the small, charming city center to see the famous Christuskirche, or with a sundowner in your guesthouse garden.

If you like, you can book a table for the evening at the legendary Joe’s Beerhouse – a lively spot that offers a rustic blend of culinary delights and culture, bridging the gap between African zest for life and Namibian hospitality.

TAG 12: DEPARTURE – OR EXTENSION UPON REQUEST

Today, it is time to say goodbye to a country that has left a lasting impression with its vast skies, warm colors, and moving encounters. Depending on your flight time, you may have a chance for a quick stroll through the city or one last cappuccino at a sidewalk café in Windhoek.

Your self-drive tour of Namibia concludes with your transfer to the airport, but the memories of glowing dunes, starry nights, and wild, welcoming landscapes will stay with you long after you return home.

Extensions or changes to the itinerary are, of course, available upon request.
