Imagine traversing the untouched wilderness of Botswana with a small group of like-minded people – in your own 4x4, along dusty tracks, across sandy plains, through shimmering waterways, and vast savannas. This is a journey free from the constraints of a typical tour, leaving room for personal discovery, slowing down, and authentic experiences.
This unguided group self-drive tour combines the freedom of the open road with the security of an organized route. With a maximum of eight guests sharing up to three off-road vehicles, the concept perfectly balances closeness to nature with individuality. You travel as a small community, setting your own daily pace, yet everything essential is taken care of: all campsites are reserved in advance, allowing you to focus entirely on the adventure.
Before the journey begins, you will receive comprehensive driver training, which is already included in the price. You will learn not only how to handle your vehicle safely in soft sand, slippery clay, or muddy terrain, but also how to recover if you get stuck, how to change a tire, and how to use the various off-road gears effectively. This training provides the confidence and peace of mind you need to navigate the wilderness on your own.
The route takes you from Maun through the famous wildlife areas of the Moremi Game Reserve, Khwai, Savuti, and finally to the Chobe River. Along the way, you will encounter herds of elephants, lions, hippos, antelopes, and an unparalleled variety of birdlife. You will camp under Africa's endless starry sky, listen to the distant roar of lions and the call of cicadas at night, and wake up with the sun in the heart of untouched nature.
As a grand finale, a three-hour boat trip on the Chobe River awaits. As you glide leisurely along the riverbanks, herds of elephants pass by the water, crocodiles bask on sandbanks, and colorful birds soar through the sky above you. It is a moment of tranquility that will resonate long after you return home.

Day 1: Maun – Vehicle Collection & Driver Training
Upon your arrival in Maun, you will be met by our local partner and taken to the rental station. There, your adventure begins with an in-depth briefing on your 4x4 vehicle, the equipment, and your planned route.
Next, you will complete a driver training course specifically tailored to Botswana’s conditions. You will learn how to drive in deep sand, mud, and water crossings, how to recover your vehicle if you get stuck, and how to use the various off-road gears. You will also practice changing a tire – ensuring you are well-prepared for any eventuality.
Afterward, there will be time to visit a supermarket to stock up on provisions for the days ahead. You will spend your first night relaxing at the Sedia Campsite in Maun.
Day 2 & 3: Camping in the Khwai Community Concession
Driving time from Maun approx. 4–5 hours, depending on road conditions and wildlife sightings
Today you set off into the fascinating wilderness of the Khwai area – one of Botswana’s most beautiful safari regions. You will spend two nights at the Hippo Pools Campsite, right on the riverbank, where elephant herds pass by during the day and hippos roam through the camp at night.
Khwai is a paradise for wildlife viewing: in addition to elephants, buffalo, and giraffes, lions, leopards, and wild dogs are frequently spotted here. You will explore the area at your own pace and plan your game drives exactly as you wish.
Day 4 & 5: Camping in the Savuti Area (Chobe National Park)
Driving time approx. 4–6 hours
The route continues north into the dry, rugged heart of Chobe National Park: Savuti. This region is known for its powerful, pristine wilderness – and for dramatic wildlife sightings. On your game drives around the Savuti Marsh, you may be lucky enough to encounter large lion prides, hyenas, elephants, and zebras.
You will stay for two nights at the SKL Campsite, where the evening sunset over the open savanna is one of the most impressive moments of the trip.
Day 6 & 7: Kasane & Boat Trip on the Chobe River
Driving time approx. 5–6 hours
On the sixth day, you will reach Kasane on the Chobe River, a lively small town at the border where Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe meet.
Your accommodation is located right on the river at the Kubu Lodge Campsite. In the afternoon, you will take a three-hour boat trip on the Chobe River – an absolute highlight of the trip. From the water, you will see elephants bathing, hippos yawning, and crocodiles lying in wait. The boat safari offers not only spectacular photo opportunities but also a quiet, almost meditative perspective on wildlife.
Day 8: Kasane – Vehicle Return & Departure
On your final day, you will return your vehicle in Kasane. From here, you can continue your journey – whether to the famous Victoria Falls, on a fly-in safari to the Caprivi Strip, or by flight back to Maun. Saying goodbye is never easy – but what remains are deep impressions, new friends, and the feeling of having truly experienced Botswana.

Special driver training included:
Special driver training is automatically included in the price. They are specifically prepared for the special conditions in Botswana. This includes driving on soft sand, slippery clay and through muddy passages as well as water courses. You will also learn how to free yourself if you get stuck. In addition, you will receive an introduction to the correct use of the various off-road gears and how to change tires correctly.
