Since 1994, our partner has operated memorable small-group safaris through southern Africa with experienced guides and like-minded travellers. The journeys combine wildlife and nature experiences with local encounters and insights into conservation and community initiatives.
The programme includes affordable wildlife safaris, walking experiences, cultural encounters, safari-lodge stays and classic overland journeys. Guests can join scheduled departures or arrange a privately guided journey.
Your role
You accompany German-speaking groups and support the professional English-speaking guide throughout the journey. Your main responsibility is to interpret the guide’s explanations into German so that every guest can follow the context. You also help with day-to-day organisation, guest communication and practical logistics, acting as an approachable point of contact throughout the tour.
What you should bring
You have excellent German and English, enjoy communicating clearly and are flexible, resilient and open to new situations and cultures. A friendly manner and genuine team spirit are essential.
Duration and location
The ideal placement lasts four to eight months, with exact dates agreed individually. Between journeys, you are based at our partner’s office in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Allowance
During tours, the daily allowance is ZAR 850 (as of 2025). Office days in Johannesburg are paid at a reduced rate of ZAR 235. Taxes and possible deductions may apply. Tips from guests are paid directly to you.
Meals and accommodation
Meals and accommodation are included during tours. Between assignments, you arrange and pay for your own meals and accommodation in Johannesburg; in the past, temporary stays with team members have sometimes been possible.
Travel and transport
You cover your own journey to South Africa and local transport between assignments.
This placement or sabbatical is not a conventional job. It is an intensive learning experience and a rare opportunity to discover southern Africa from a different perspective. You gain first-hand insight into safari operations and local tourism while developing personally through new experiences, challenges and encounters.
