Travel details

Overview

On the Rhino Route, you will not only experience the highlights of Botswana, but also drive through the Zambezi region in Namibia, also known as the Caprivi Strip. And this with your off-road vehicle and complete camping equipment.

There is certainly no more intensive safari experience than driving your own off-road vehicle with a roof tent through the vast expanses of Botswana and Namibia. Go wherever you want, at your own pace. See what interests you and stay where it is most exciting for you. To do this, set up camp in the midst of nature, light a fire, prepare dinner there yourself and sleep under millions of stars...

You can experience all of this on our Botswana and Namibia 4x4 safari. You can set your route completely by yourself, or you can choose one of our pre-booked trips, just the way you want. Adventures and unforgettable experiences are guaranteed!

And if you are a bit unsure, we also offer training courses for you so that you can prepare yourself even better and enjoy your safari to the fullest.

Day 1:
Maun

After your arrival, you will be met by our representative and taken to the rental station. Here you will receive detailed information about your vehicle, the equipment and your route that you will be driving in the coming days. You will then have the opportunity to buy your supplies for the next few days at one of the local supermarkets.

You will spend your first night at the camping site in Maun.

Day 2 & 3:
Camping in the Moreni Game Reserve

Travel time from Maun approx. 4-6 hours, depending on wildlife viewing

You'll spend two days at the Moreni Game Reserve. Located in the east of the Okavango Delta, this park is one of the most beautiful reserves in Africa. It covers more than 4,871 square kilometers of pristine wilderness, and the varied terrain includes savanna, winding waterways, and dense forest.

This diverse ecosystem supports an incredibly wide range of wildlife, from large herds of buffalo, wildebeest and zebra, the rare Sitatunga and Letschwe antelope, lion, cheetah and packs of wild dogs in open meadows. The bird life is fertile and includes most of the 550 bird species on Botswana's national bird list.

Day 4 & 5:
Camping in the Khwai area of the Moreni Game Reserve

Dismantling the camp and continuing towards the Khwai River.

The Khwai area of the Okavango is located along the northern border of the Moremi Game Reserve. This is an unfenced border that allows animals to move freely between forests, where water is abundant during the rainy season, and the permanent rivers and lagoons of the delta.

Day 6 & 7:
Savuti Area (Chobe National Park)

Dismantling the camp and continuing towards Chobe National Park.

Savuti, also known as Savute, is located in the heart of the beautiful Chobe National Park. This dynamic wilderness is an extensive savanna punctuated by several rocky outcrops that guard the mostly dry valley that was once his lifeline like a relic from ancient times. The Savuti region goes through wet and dry cycles, and where wild dogs hunt in the dry course of the river today, crocodiles swam twenty years ago. Visitors to this spectacular area can discover numerous animal species, including: a wide variety of birds, elephants, antelopes, lions, jackals and foxes, zessebes, kudus, hyenas, cheetahs, cape buffalo herds, and thousands of migrating zebras and wildebeests.

Day 8 & 9:
Ihaha Area (Chobe National Park)

The Chobe River forms the northern border of Chobe National Park, known for its diverse and abundant wildlife viewing opportunities. This section of the park is best known for its dense concentration of elephant and hippo populations, but the water attracts all types of animals, including large herds of buffaloes. A visit to this area guarantees a close encounter with a range of species of African wildlife.

Day 10:
Kasane - (Katima Mulilo)

After the morning game drive, drive to the town of Kasane. Here you can replenish your supplies, take food and drinks on board and really refuel your car for the next few days. Either spend tonight in Kasane, or you drive to Namibia via the Ngoma border crossing. Then spend the night at Katima Mulilo on the Zambezi.

Day 11 & 12:
Kwando River, Caprivi Strip

These two days are all about the national parks in the Caprivi Strip. The Mudumu, Bwabwata and Nkasa Lupala National Parks are all wild and rarely visited, so they offer a very special safari experience. With your all-terrain vehicle, however, you are well prepared for this. Mudumu National Park is ideal for a day trip. The slopes can only be driven by off-road vehicles and can be affected by precipitation and river levels, especially during the rainy season from November to April. In Bwabwata National Park, a pristine and beautiful part of Caprivi, you can very often see an abundance of elephants and buffaloes. Nkasa Lupala National Park (formerly Mamili Park) east of Mudumu National Park offers open savannas, beautiful leadwood trees, acacia trees and mopanie scrubland. Buffalo herds by the hundreds are a common sight, with Lechwe, Kudu and Impala galore.

Day 13:
Ngepi

The camp is beautifully situated on the banks of the Okavango. Among other things, it is known for its unique, crocodile-proof pool in the river. From here, you can go on game drives to the Mahango and Bwabwata National Parks or visit the nearby Popa Waterfalls.

Day 14:
Tsodilo Hills

After breakfast, you will leave Namibia and return to Botswana. Today's destination is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Tsodilo Hills. The four massive rocks rising up to 1489 meters form the highest elevations in Botswana. Unlike the wetlands visited so far, you are in a desert-like landscape. Tsodilo is one of the sites with the highest density of rock paintings in the world and is also known as the Louvre of the Desert. Local guides will show you the rock carvings here (for a small fee) and tell you about the history of this magical place.

Day 15:
Maun

After leaving the camp, it's about 4-5 hours back to your starting point, Maun, where the circle comes full circle and marks the end of this trip for you. This is where you return your rental vehicle and, depending on the program you have booked, you can return to Europe from here or take part in the connection program.
