Internship/working holidays or sabbatical job at a partner company

Travel companion in Africa (M/F/D)

Since 1994, our partner has been offering unforgettable small-group safaris through Southern Africa, led by experienced guides and shared with like-minded travelers. These tours combine authentic nature experiences with local encounters, providing insights into conservation projects and community-led initiatives.

The range of offerings includes affordable wildlife safaris that blend game viewing, hiking, cultural exchanges, stays in safari lodges, and classic overland travel. Whether you are traveling solo, as a couple, with friends, or with family, you can join scheduled group departures or arrange a bespoke private tour.

Your Role:
You will accompany group tours as a German-speaking point of contact on the ground, supporting the professional English-speaking guide throughout the journey. Your primary responsibility is to translate the guide's commentary into German, ensuring that all guests fully understand the content and context. Beyond this, you will assist with daily operations—whether it’s local organization, guest communication, or logistical support. You will be a constant resource for the travelers, actively ensuring they feel comfortable and well-cared for.

What You Should Bring:
You possess excellent German and English skills and enjoy conveying information clearly and engagingly. Flexibility, stamina, and a willingness to adapt to new situations and cultures are just as important for this role as an open personality and team spirit.

Terms and Conditions:
The ideal duration for this placement is between four and eight months, with the exact timeframe determined individually. Between tours, you will be based at our partner's location in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Compensation:
During tours, you will receive a daily allowance of 850 ZAR (as of 2025). For work at the office in Johannesburg, a reduced daily allowance of 235 ZAR applies. Taxes and potential deductions may apply. Additionally, you will receive tips directly from the tour participants.

Meals:
All meals are included during the tours. Between tours, you are responsible for your own meals.

Accommodation:
Accommodation is a fixed part of the program during tours. You are responsible for organizing your own accommodation in Johannesburg between assignments. In the past, it has been possible to stay with team members on occasion.

Travel & Transport:
You are responsible for the cost of your travel to South Africa. You are also responsible for your own transport between assignments (e.g., from your accommodation to the meeting point).

This internship or sabbatical is not a traditional job, but an intensive learning experience in an extraordinary environment. It is not primarily about earning money, but about the unique opportunity to experience Africa from a very special perspective. You will be right in the heart of the action as nature, wildlife, and cultural encounters come together in an authentic way. You will not only learn a great deal about daily safari life and local tourism, but also grow personally through new experiences, challenges, and encounters.

Please send your application via email to hallo@ajimba.com or call us if you have any further questions. Please note that we (Ajimba African Tours) are not the employer, but are acting as an intermediary for this position.
