Traveling to Zimbabwe — Questions and Answers

When is the best time to travel to Zimbabwe?

Basically:
May to October (dry season) is ideal for safaris; November to March is the rainy season/“ green season” with lush vegetation and good bird watching.

By travel theme:

  • Victoria Falls: Highest water level around February—May (heavy spray, limited visibility), lowest around September—November (less spray, better visibility & river rafting).
  • Hwange National Park: June—October at great water points; more distribution during the rainy season.
  • Mana Pools: Typically open around April/May to November; best walking/canoe season June—October.

Practical planning tips:

  • High season: July—October; reserve early, especially mana pools
  • temperatures: October/November is very hot in the Zambezi Valley.
  • Health: Malaria risk in lower altitudes — individual advice makes sense.

What vaccinations/health advice applies to Zimbabwe?

Basically:
Check STIKO standard vaccinations; hepatitis A is often recommended. yellow fever: no risk in the country; Certificate only when entering from YF risk areas/transit.

Travel vaccinations depending on travel itinerary:
hepatitis B, typhoid fever, rabies (animal contacts/walking safaris).

Malaria:
High risk at low altitudes (including Zambezi Valley, Victoria Falls), peak frequent Nov—Jun; low to no risk into Harare/Bulawayo. Protection against stings +, if necessary, seek medical advice on chemoprophylaxis.

More notes:
Avoid fresh water (Schistosomiasis, including Zambezi/Kariba).

Important note:
These notes do not replace individual travel medicine advice. Vaccinations, malaria protection and, if applicable, yellow fever certificate depend on Route, season, pre-existing conditions and activities From — please seek medical advice at least 4—6 weeks before departure; as early as possible for last-minute trips.

What are the entry requirements for Zimbabwe?

Basically:

  • German/Austrians/Swiss: Visa required, you should definitely apply for an eVisa in advance.
  • Common fees: Single Entry approx. USD 30; Double Entry approx. USD 45.— KAZA UniVisa: approx. USD 50, valid for 30 days, allows multiple commuting between Zimbabwe & Zambia (including day trip to Botswana) — ideally around Victoria Falls.
  • Online entry declaration recommended/partly required.
  • Passport: usually 6 months remaining validity and sufficient free pages.

Important note:
Airlines strictly check entry documents; deviations/changes are possible. Please also check the websites of the respective embassies/consulates and the airline.

How much is tipping usual in Zimbabwe?

Basically:
In tourism, the majority of people pay and type in USD. Tipping is common; many lodges/camps have tip boxes.

Indicative values by service:

  • Restaurants: 10— 12% (up to 15% with excellent service).
  • Safari guide: 10-20 USD per person/day
  • Tracker: 5-10 USD per person/day
  • Lodge/Camp Staff (Pool): $5-10 per person/night
  • Transfer driver: 5-10 USD per vehicle each way (or 2-3 USD per person).
  • Hotel-Porter: $1-2 per bag
  • Housekeeping: $2-3 per room/night.
  • Activity guides (such as rafting at Vic Falls): $10-20 per person

Practical tips:
Carry small USD notes; in some cases, it is not possible to pay by card for tips.

Note:
Tipping is voluntary and depends on service quality, travel time and group size. Some companies collect in the team pool. If a service fee is shown, type less or not at all.

How good are mobile telephones/Internet in Zimbabwe?

Basically:
Decent supply in cities (Harare, Bulawayo) and Victoria Falls Town; significantly more incomplete in the countryside and in parks.

Details:

  • Victoria Falls & Parks: Mostly network in the city; often no reception in Zambezi/Hwange areas outside the lodges.
  • Speed: In cities, sufficient for social/video calls; outside, often 3G or no network at all.
  • SIM/eSIM: Local prepaid SIMs available; eSIM availability limited/store-specific.
  • WiFi: Many hotels/lodges offer WiFi; stability fluctuates, larger uploads/cloud backups are better in cities.

Practical tips:
Register your SIM with a pass in the official shop on site. Don't expect a stable network for safari-heavy trips — plan satellite messengers if necessary.

Note:
Roaming from the EU is often expensive/limited — local (e) SIMs with a data package are usually the cheapest solution. Coverage and eSIM availability differ from provider/region; seek advice locally at the official shop.

What do I have to pay attention to when driving a rental car in Zimbabwe?

General notes:
documents: Driving license + international driving license, passport, rental contract, insurance certificates always at hand.
surety: Always buckled up, no cell phone control at the wheel, enough breaks.
border crossings: Clarify with landlord beforehand; “Letter of Authority”, additional insurance and copies of registration may be required.
emergencies: Save emergency numbers and roadside assistance; secure the vehicle in the event of an accident, keep calm, inform the landlord/insurance company.
Environment & parks: Stay on trails, don't feed animals, respect parking rules

What are the top highlights in Zimbabwe for first-time visitors?

Basically:
Zimbabwe combines natural wonders, world-class walking safaris and cultural sites. Classics: Victoria Falls — Hwange — (optional Mana Pools/Lake Kariba) in 8-12 days.

Top highlights:

  • Victoria Falls: One of the largest waterfalls in the world — different impressions depending on the season.
  • Hwange National Park: Large elephant population, varied landscape, excellent waterhole observations.
  • Mana pools (optional): Zambezi floodplains, canoe & walking safaris, very intensive nature experience.
  • Matusadona/Lake Kariba (optional): Houseboats, hunting by boat & vehicle.
  • Matobo Hills & Great Zimbabwe (optional): Granite domes, rhino tracking; important ruined city (UNESCO).

Sample route (8-12 days):
Victoria Falls (2-3 nights)Hwange (3-4) — optional Lake Kariba/Mana Pools (3-4) — Return flight from Victoria Falls/Harare

Practical tips:

  • KAZA-Univisa (depending on route) facilitates border crossings with Zambia/Botswana (Vic Falls region).
  • Walking/canoe safaris require basic fitness and are guided — reserve early.
  • Domestic flights save transfer time.

How much money should I plan per day for food & refueling, etc. in Zimbabwe?

Basically:
In tourist areas, it is common in USD paid. Meals moderately; activities at Vic Falls can cost money.

Food & drink (p. p./day):
cca 20-40 USD (cheaper locally, tourist hotspots more expensive).

Refueling (per vehicle/day):
indicative value $0.18-0.30 per km (SUV/4×4)
example: 200 kilometers ⇒ 36-60 USD.

Other (per day):
5-15 USD (water, snacks, parking).

Optional activities/admissions:
Vic Falls entry/guides, rafting, game drives, etc.; rough $10-100+ per person depending on the activity.

Which wildlife sightings are best when in Zimbabwe?

Basically:
dry season June—October = highest density of water points; “green season” Nov—March = lush, lots of birds, young animals — animals spread out.

By region/type:

  • Hwange: July—Oct legendary elephant clusters at artificially pumped waterholes.
  • Mana Pools: June—Oct top for walking/canoeing; iconic elephants that “get up” on Faidherbia trees (common Aug-Oct).
  • Matusadona/Lake Kariba: dry season clearer sightings; combine boat & game drive.
  • Zambezi National Park/Vic Falls environment: dry season best chances of big game; birding Nov—March.

practice:
Reserve walking/canoe safaris early; heat in Sept—Oct factor in.

Note:
Best times are tendencies — Each year is slightly different due to weather conditions. For precise planning (e.g. migration, flood levels), a quick check a few weeks before departure and, if necessary, choosing camps/lodges that suit the season. We are happy to assist you with this!

How safe is Zimbabwe for individual travelers?

Basically:
Tourist centers (Victoria Falls, Hwange, Mana Pools) are easy to reach with normal precautionary measures. Increased attention is needed in cities; economic conditions can influence availability.

Most common risks & practical tips:

  • Money & payments: In tourist areas, often USD — carry small notes; card payments are not reliable everywhere.
  • roads: Quality fluctuates; potholes, animals, occasional checks — driving during the day.
  • cities: Valuables close to your body, park empty.
  • Parks/rivers: Crocodiles/hippos — do not visit shore areas at dusk/night.
  • photos: Do not photograph military/official installations.
  • Checkpoints: Quiet/friendly, keep documents organized.

General notes:

  • Safety is local and up to date — short location checks before each stage (accommodation, guides, current information).
  • Travel documents & emergency contacts Prepare digitally and analogously; provide family/partners with a rough travel plan.
  • insurance coverage Check (travel/sick/return transport); save local emergency numbers.
  • If something seems funny: Change location, seek help from the hotel/guide — gut feeling counts.
