Traveling in small groups: Small group trips

Experience together.

Travel with like-minded people through the most exciting areas of Africa.

Would you rather discover southern Africa with like-minded people? And maybe even in German? Then you've come to the right place. With our partner Sunway Safaris, we will take you to the most beautiful areas of this exciting continent.

Sunway Safaris was founded back in 1994, right after the country opened up. Since then, they have been carrying out a variety of different trips. All with a maximum of twelve participants, all in full compliance with social and environmental standards, and some also in German. Find out why Ajimba and Sunways go so well together, what we can achieve together for people, animals and the environment in Africa and book your dream vacation here with us.

All tours are carried out in special safari trucks. This brings you even closer to Africa. You can find all information about this under our travel offers.

Travel across Africa in small groups.

Many of our trips have German-language departures, all others are English-language. The trips vary in the type of accommodation and the degree of participation, as well as you are invited as a guest. All information about this can be found at the bottom of this page.

We can offer you a large number of other small group trips that we have not been able to present here so far due to lack of time. Please just talk to us!

Information about our small group trips

Our travel types

Classic round trips

Authentic wilderness, adventure trips in comfort and style. In line with our popular small group concept, we'll take you to the highlights of the countries you've traveled to without going off the beaten track, and stay in some of the most fantastic private lodges in southern Africa. Do you want G&T?

Our 'Classic Round Trips” are adventure trips and offer the same quality service that Sunway is known for, but with a higher standard of accommodation and a bit more comfort.

The accommodation we use is in “classic” South African style and consists of 3+ star lodges, tent camps and guest houses. Because of their location, we have chosen lodges that pay great attention to detail and offer a casual and relaxed atmosphere. All rooms are equipped with private bathrooms. In some cases we will stay within national parks, but in other cases we prefer to stay in private lodges. Our concept is to offer you as a traveller the best possible experience.

Most meals are home-cooked in the guesthouses, lodges, and camps, so you can enjoy your buffet-style breakfast and casual dinners with your travel companions at the lodge table. On a few days of travel, you'll have roadside picnics and your versatile tour guide will prepare lunch for you. There will also be some meals at your own expense, which are listed in the itinerary.

'Classic round trips' are a relaxed holiday experience where you can sit back and take everything in. Africa has a special way of touching your soul.

'Classic round trips” are trips without participation, which means that the staff prepares and tidies the meals.

Explorers trips

If it has always been your dream to travel to Africa, then we offer you interesting, varied and exciting trips that bring you closer to nature and the people of Africa. With comfortable, simple, and well-located accommodation, our small-group safaris offer fantastic value for money combined with Sunway Safaris' quality service.

The 'explorer trips' are based on our proven concept of adventure safaris in small groups. You spend the night in guest houses, chalets, lodges or permanent tent camps. The accommodation we use is usually rated 2 to 3 stars, comfortable, clean and friendly and is booked on the basis of double rooms. Most rooms have private bathrooms, and in some cases there are also shared bathrooms. Bed linen and bedding are provided. Details of accommodation for each night can be found in our detailed travel plans.

On some of our routes, we visit the Okavango Delta with 2 nights in a mobile tent camp. Each dome tent has two camp beds with bed linen and its own chemical toilet. Shared bucket shower with hot water from the fire. Most meals are prepared from the truck by Sunway guides. The evening meals are eaten around a campfire or in a boma, and on travel days, there is a picnic on the side of the road. Depending on the itinerary, some dinners and breakfasts are prepared by certain lodges themselves.

With professional Sunway guides leading our safaris and a comfy bed to sleep in every night, you're assured of a fantastic vacation. You won't find better value for money for a safari.

On 'Explorer Travel', a limited participation of our guests is required, such as carrying their own luggage or helping with washing up.

Camping Safaris

Camping in the wilds of Africa is the right thing to do — it's a great experience to lie in your tent at night and listen to the roar of lions or the haunting cry of a jackal! On a safari, you spend the night at designated campsites in national parks, private reserves, private campgrounds, and cities. The facilities are good, there are hot showers, electricity, laundry facilities and usually a bar and restaurant. Some camps further north can be very basic and have limited facilities and simple reed showers, but still have flushed toilets!

In Botswana's national parks, we usually use private game campsites. There are no facilities on wild camping nights. The Sunway team will set up a bucket shower with warm water from the fire and a pit toilet tent. Wild camping is a true wilderness experience, and we keep our impact on the environment as low as possible by taking everything we pick up back with us.

Sunway provides all camping equipment, with the exception of a sleeping bag and pillow (which you can rent). The canvas dome tents we use are large (2.2 x 2.2 x 1.8 meters) and have integrated insect nets. It only takes 5 minutes to assemble and disassemble. We supply 5 cm thick mattresses that are warm and comfortable. The camping chairs have a backrest and all cooking and eating utensils are also provided. The food is stored in sealed containers and coolers or freezers so that it can be prepared fresh and hygienically.

It's not all camping! Most safaris include a range of overnight stays in lodges or guesthouses. The facilities are modest but clean and comfortable. You usually have a twin room with a private bathroom. Most meals are prepared by Sunway guides, evening meals are eaten around a campfire or in a boma, and on travel days there is lunch in the form of a roadside picnic.

On 'Camping Safaris, 'a limited participation of our guests is required, such as carrying their own luggage or helping with washing up.

Adventure expeditions

For experienced travelers — go on a journey into the unknown with Sunway Safaris. On our expedition trips, we take you to the remote places that people dream of but rarely visit because it is so difficult to get there. You'll travel with an experienced Sunway guide and a maximum of 8 guests in a 4WD vehicle to explore these secluded places.

The Sunway expedition trips are designed for travelers who want to visit new and exciting destinations. All participants must be aware that expeditions require flexibility and an understanding of the open travel style. It is not a fixed tour, but a journey of discovery. Sometimes traveling is difficult and exhausting, and there may be delays and changes of plans.

On 'Adventure Expeditions', our guests are expected to be fully involved.

Our vehicles

Your safari vehicle: The conditions in Africa are incredibly diverse and we travel in custom-built safari trucks that enable us to be completely independent on safari. Our reliable fleet of safari trucks has proven to be the best safari vehicles in southern Africa.

Safari Trucks

Years of safari experience have been incorporated into the construction of the Sunway Safaris trucks. The Sunway trucks comply with the latest South African transport and safety regulations. For your comfort, individual seats (with seat belts), plenty of legroom and large vertical sliding windows ensure unobstructed vision and photography.

There are roof hatches for excellent “open” visibility and an integrated driver's cabin and passenger compartment so that contact with the driver is easy. Each truck also has large packing compartments, a built-in kitchen, a freezer, a drinking water tank, interior lighting and a gas stove (to minimize wood consumption and destruction of forest areas). There is also a retractable staircase to the passenger compartment, which makes access easier for customers.
We also use minibuses for some small-group safaris. All of our vehicles are purchased new and serviced by Mercedes and Toyota representatives, so we can ensure smooth travel operations with assistance in virtually every city in southern Africa.

Land Cruisers

We have an operations office in Maun, Botswana, where our four-wheel drive vehicles are stationed. For the national parks in Botswana, we use these custom-made 4WDs with individual “bucket seats” and trailers for equipment. (We also use supply vehicles for Botswana camping groups of more than 9 people). Game viewing from an “open” vehicle is best in Botswana — small groups in land rovers and land cruisers have the best game viewing!

These custom-built wildlife observation vehicles are the first of their kind in Botswana. Each new vehicle has a built-in “roll cage” that meets South Africa's latest safety standards, and every single bucket seat has a lap belt. The vehicles are built by a registered bus manufacturer and ensure the structural integrity of the passenger cabin in the unlikely event of a rollover.

The safety of passengers is a priority for all of us. Sunway Safaris believes that by using the safest vehicles for wildlife viewing, we are setting an industry standard that meets international legal requirements for passenger transport vehicles. We have set a high standard for vehicle construction so Sunway customers can rely on the safety of the vehicles they travel in.

Mini buses

Where road conditions permit, such as in South Africa, Namibia and parts of Botswana, we can also use minibuses. On 5% of the tours, we can use 12-seat minibuses with air conditioning (with trailers for equipment and luggage). The safaris often have several long travel days and offer a nice trip to exciting and varied destinations.

Mokoro

The mokoro, a wooden dugout canoe, is the traditional means of transportation for the inhabitants of the Okavango Delta in Botswana. (The plural is mekoro). It is driven through the waters of the delta by standing in the rear and thrusting through the shallow water with a pole. The pole or “ngashi” used to push the mokoro is usually made from the silver Terminalia tree (Terminalia Sericea). Mekoros are traditionally dug from the trunk of a large, straight tree, such as the sausage tree (Kigelia Africana). However, modern Mekoro are increasingly being made from fiberglass. Due to increasing pressure on the environment, Sunway has initiated a project in the Ditsipie area of the Okavango Delta, where we encourage Polers to use fiberglass Mekoros. For more information about this project, please visit our responsible tourism page.

For the more adventurous, gliding through the Okavango Delta in a mokoro with a local guide is the essence of the Okavango experience. You glide silently through the water as you explore the maze of shallow waterways, looking out for wildlife and admiring birdlife. We have two people per mokoro, with a Poler guide and your personal sleeping bag and luggage. The camping equipment is transported into the wild in several other Mokoro. A typical Okavango trip consists of 3 days and 2 nights of wild camping. During this time, you'll have a unique opportunity to learn about the traditions and lifestyle of the Okavango people. Ask your police officers questions because even though their English is limited, they have extensive knowledge.
