section border

The borders are being reopened for trips to South Africa.

The global travel ban to South Africa imposed as a result of COVID-19 has been lifted.

We can finally say that international travel to and from South Africa is allowed again. This applies to business and vacation trips. We have summarized the entry conditions again below.

On request, we will be happy to explain to you what a trip to South Africa looks like today. Standardised hygiene protocols are being implemented nationwide and integrated into everyday life.

Following President Cyril Ramaphosa's announcement on November 11 that South Africa's borders are now open to all countries, the Ministry of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs has announced updated lockdown level 1 regulations.

For example, the following guidelines must be observed when arriving in South Africa:

Travelers must

  • present a negative COVID-19 test result (PCR test/ Polymerase Chain Reaction) that is not older than 72 hours from the time of departure from the country of origin to South Africa. This test must be performed by a certified physician and must include their name and signature. All travelers are checked for symptoms and contact with infected people upon arrival.
  • If symptoms (elevated body temperature and flu-like symptoms, etc.) occur upon arrival or if there has been contact with infected people, another COVID-19 test must be carried out on site. The costs of this test are borne by the traveller. If this new test is positive, the traveller must quarantine at a specific location for 10 days. Accommodation at this quarantine location is at the expense of the traveller. For this purpose, international travelers should have mandatory travel insurance that covers the costs of this possible further COVID-19 test and a possible quarantine in South Africa.
  • Proof of the accommodation address must be presented should travelers have to quarantine themselves at the time of arrival in South Africa.
  • All travelers must install the COVID Alert South Africa mobile app.
  • Binding information is provided by the South African embassies in Berlin, Vienna and Bern.
