We leave Johannesburg and head east to Mpumalanga. In the afternoon, we will visit the gold mining town of Pilgrims Rest and the view point of God's Window. We stretch our legs on a short walk from Mac Mac Pools and then make our way to our chalets on the edge of the escarpment.
The next morning we get up early for our first long hike on the Blyde River. We hike down from the edge of the escarpment into the canyon and enjoy the views of the Three Sisters and the river below before making our way back up. After lunch, we'll spend the afternoon exploring the forests and waterfalls that make Mpumalanga a lovely destination. One exciting optional activity is the Graskop Gorge lift, which takes you down for a stroll through the lush Afromontane forest (own expense).

Mac Mac hike — easy short hike to get us started. 2-3 km, less than an hour in total. Hiking trail with very few differences in altitude.
Day 2: Medium
Blyde River Canyon — 3.5 hour hike on good trails with some rocky sections.
Day 3-4
KRUGER PRIVATE GAME RESERVE
After an early breakfast, we make our way to Kruger National Park. We enter the national park and spend the day enjoying an exciting game drive. Your guide will interpret the signs of the bush while we hope to find elephants, rhinos, and perhaps the hard-to-spot leopard. We'll stop for a picnic lunch before we finish our game drive in the late afternoon, leave the park and head to our private lodge in the greater Kruger area.
The next day, we set off for Kruger National Park before dawn, hoping to use the early daylight to watch wildlife. In the afternoon, we return to the lodge and take a short bush walk where we learn about the tracks and other signs of the wild animals that we hope to find on foot.

Day 5-6
KINGDOM OF SWAZILAND/ESWATINI
We enter the Kingdom of Swaziland/Eswatini and travel through a lush fruit-growing area into the mountains. We spend 2 nights on the edge of the Malalotja Nature Reserve and have a full day to hike through this rarely explored mountain area. The Swasi people have a rich cultural heritage, and we will visit crafts and medicine markets on the 7th day on our way through the capital city of Mbabane.

4-6 hours hiking through the hills of Malalotja Game Reserve to a beautiful waterfall. The trails are uneven and the hike has steep sections.
Day 7-8
ZULULAND - GAME RESERVE
Back in South Africa, we make our way to our lodge in a private game reserve in the Msinene Nature Reserve. We'll take a walk with our local guide, who will point out some of the over 540 bird species that live in this area. We follow in the footsteps of shy Nyala antelopes in the vegetation of the Msinene River.
The next morning, we visit the Hluhluwe Game Reserve, a core area for rhino conservation. Enjoy the sunset and the sounds of the bush before enjoying a hearty dinner at the lodge.

Day 9-10
ZULULAND - HISTORIC BATTLEFIELDS
We leave the Zululand bush behind us and make our way through the picturesque hills and valleys of Zululand to the small town of Dundee. Battles were fought here between the Zulus, the British and the Boers - war cries are still heard in the hills. We visit the informative Talana Museum before we stay at our lodge and have the afternoon at leisure.
The next morning, we'll explore the Isandlwana battlefield before embarking on an exciting 4-5 hour hike, following the famous footsteps of two British refugees through the rolling hills of Zululand to the Buffalo River. We'll visit Rourke's Drift later in the day before returning to the lodge.

4-5 hours fugitive drift hike over rough terrain, with strenuous sections and steep climbs. The water level of the Buffalo River determines whether the entire hiking trail can be completed.
Day 11-12
DRAKENSBERG
Experience the magnificent scenery of the Drakensberg Mountains or the uKhahlamba “Barrier of Spears”. We spend the night at the foot of the “mountain” (altitude 1,600 m) and spend a whole day hiking on the mountain trails before taking a refreshing swim in the clear mountain streams of the Royal Natal National Park. The fresh mountain air is relaxing, and our lodge is a fantastic place to relax and enjoy wonderful mountain views.

DRAKENSBERG
We start the day with an early breakfast and make our way to Witsieshoek at the foot of the magnificent Sentinel Peak. At the end of a rough dirt road, we start our hike, including a short section over chain ladders, to the summit of the Drakensberg Amphitheatre and the beautiful Tugela Falls (altitude 3,000 m), which offer unparalleled views of KwaZulu-Natal. After our hike, we make our way to our mountain lodge (altitude 2,300 m) with views of the Mont-Aux-Sources mountain range.

Overnight stays :
We spend 13 nights on safari in small, intimate and often private lodges (including tented camps) with private bathrooms.
Meals:
13 breakfasts, 14 lunches and 10 dinners are included. Of these, 9 breakfasts and 8 dinners are offered by the lodges. The remaining meals are prepared by the Sunway crew on the vehicle and enjoyed at the Boma or around the campfire.
Transportation:
We use a custom-built Sunway safari truck with 12 front-facing seats. These vehicles are comfortable to drive and have large sliding windows and front hatches so everyone has a good view; or (on 10% of tours) 12-seater Mercedes Sprinter minibuses with air conditioning (with a trailer for equipment).
Limited collaboration:
An essential part of your safari is a certain amount of collaboration. From carrying your own bag to the room, to carrying daypacks and water bottles on hikes, to packing the truck in the morning, it's all part of your adventure. When the tour guides provide meals, we ask our guests to help (in turn) with the dishes. If everyone makes a little effort, the journey will be smooth and successful and a pleasure for everyone involved.
