Accommodation :
For the 13 nights of the safari, we stay in small, intimate, and often private lodges (including tented camps) with en-suite bathrooms.

Meals:
13 breakfasts, 14 lunches, and 10 dinners are included. Of these, 9 breakfasts and 8 dinners are provided by the lodges. The remaining meals are prepared by the Sunway crew at the vehicle and enjoyed at the boma or around the campfire.

Transport:
We use a custom-built Sunway safari truck with 12 forward-facing seats. These vehicles are comfortable to ride in and feature large sliding windows and roof hatches, ensuring everyone has a great view; or (on 10% of tours) 12-seater air-conditioned Mercedes Sprinter minibuses (with a trailer for equipment).

Limited participation:
A key part of your safari is a degree of participation. From carrying your own bag to your room, to carrying daypacks and water bottles on hikes, to helping pack the truck in the morning—all of this is part of your adventure. When the guides prepare meals, we ask our guests to help (on a rotating basis) with the washing up. Hiking in South Africa

The following information is provided by our long-standing partner, Sunway Safaris, and outlines their travel philosophy and services.

A comprehensive introduction to the northern part of South Africa:
Wildlife viewing and landscapes!

An exciting journey featuring culture, wilderness, adventure, hiking, and mountains:
Kruger National Park, Eswatini, Zululand, and the Drakensberg.

Why travel with Sunway Safaris?

  • Small groups: Small travel groups of no more than 12 participants make it possible to truly experience Africa and connect with this wonderful continent and its people. This is the key to our success. Our trips appeal to all age groups. Our guests range from 25 to 65+, with an average age of 45. The diversity of our participants contributes to a unique safari experience every time.
  • 2 Sunway expedition leaders: Tour guides are the key to any safari. On a Sunway safari, you will travel with 2 qualified and registered field guides (Field Guides Association of SA). Having two guides as a crew, rather than one guide and one driver, ensures an engaging journey with a wealth of knowledge and information. Our guides are passionate about Africa, its people, and its wildlife, and they love nothing more than sharing their knowledge with you.
  • Guaranteed departures: Departures in bold are guaranteed. All other departures are guaranteed with a minimum of 4 people.
  • All-inclusive price: When we travel ourselves, we always believe that we should find and see the best a country has to offer. When planning Sunway itineraries, we ensure that every trip provides the best content and experiences. All entrance fees are included in the price, as is a wide range of activities and most meals. Many highlights are built into our tours, so you can see and experience the best of the destination without having to pay extra on the spot.
  • Safety: Our fleet of vehicles is custom-built to ensure comfortable and safe travel. Each vehicle is constructed by an authorized manufacturer according to the latest safety requirements and features a safety cell and lap belts. This gives you peace of mind when traveling on the often challenging African roads with Sunway Safaris.
  • Good2Go: Sunway Safaris is committed to responsible travel and supporting local projects and initiatives in the regions we visit. In our trip descriptions, the Good2Go symbol highlights selected projects or measures associated with that specific journey.
  • Solo travelers: Traveling alone won't put a strain on your wallet, as our reservations team will pair you with a roommate of the same gender to make the trip more affordable. However, you still have the option to book a single room or tent for a small additional fee.
  • Experience: We have over 31 years of experience planning trips through Southern Africa. As a result, we have perfected our itineraries over many years to ensure your trip runs smoothly.

Age limit:

  • On all scheduled tours, we accept children aged 12-17 when accompanied by an adult.
  • We have no upper age limit. Guests over the age of 65 at the time of travel require a medical certificate confirming they are fit and healthy enough to participate in a group tour.
  • We have many guests over 65 who are perfectly capable of enjoying all aspects of a Sunway tour, whether staying in lodges or camping. Please contact us for further information.

Walking grades:

  • Easy: 1-3 hours of hiking for reasonably fit people with experience hiking in rural areas. Includes a few unpaved paths. A pleasant morning or afternoon hike. Relatively flat with minimal elevation gain (<200m).
  • Moderate: 3-5 hours of hiking for reasonably fit people with experience hiking in rural areas. Includes some steep and unpaved paths, open terrain, and brisk walking. Moderate elevation gain (200-400m).
  • Difficult: 4-6 hours of hiking for people with a good level of fitness. Includes steep, unpaved paths, open terrain, and a brisk pace. If you have any doubts about your fitness level, please speak with your tour operator or local guide to assess the difficulty. Significant elevation gain (>400m) and/or hiking at altitudes above 2,500m above sea level.

Payment on-site:

No on-site payment is required for this safari.

Recommended reading:

Before you travel, you might want to read the following books. These books are not specific to Sunways tours, but they provide good background and insight into the countries you will be visiting.

  • Long Walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela (the autobiography of one of the greatest political leaders of our time).
  • Cry the Beloved Country by Alan Paton (the deeply moving story of Zulu pastor Stephen Kumalo and his son Absalom. A classic about love and hope, courage and endurance, and the dignity of a man).
  • The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay (the story of a young man in search of the love that binds friends together and the passion that binds lovers together, only to discover that it takes only one to change the world).
  • The Covenant by James A. Michener (how the best and worst of two continents shaped a wilderness into the land that would become South Africa).
  • My Traitor’s Heart by Rian Malan (Malan, a former South African crime reporter, searches for the truth about apartheid).
  • When the Lion Feeds by Wilbur Smith (a novel set in Natal, South Africa, in the 1870s).
  • Jock of the Bushveld by J. Percy FitzPatrick (the story of a trader and his dog, set around 1880 in the Pilgrim’s Rest and Kruger Park area).
  • The Steps of the Sun by Joanna Trollope (a love story set during the Boer War).
  • Newman's Birds of Southern Africa by Kenneth Newman.
  • Sasol Birds of Southern Africa by Ian Sinclair, Phil Hockey, and W.R. Tarboton.
  • The Safari Companion: A Guide to Watching African Mammals Including Hoofed Mammals, Carnivores, and Primates by Richard D. Estes and Daniel Otte.
  • Field Guide to Trees of Southern Africa (Field Guides) by Braam Van Wyk, Keith Coates Palgrave, and Piet Van Wyk.

Shopping:

Handicrafts such as carvings, candles, batiks, wirework, paintings, and clothing in Swaziland and Zululand are among the best in Southern Africa.

Food:

  • We take pride in providing our travelers with high-quality, delicious, and healthy meals three times a day. Exceptions are noted in the itinerary, where we will explore local restaurants.
  • Our tour guides handle the shopping and meal planning for the group. They strive to source fresh produce whenever possible. A general overview:
    • Breakfast: Coffee, cereal, and/or toast, or occasionally a hot breakfast.
    • Lunch: Cheese, cold cuts, and salads served with bread or rolls.
    • Dinner: Braais (barbecues), potjies (stews), stir-fries, and more. We use standard plates, mugs, and cutlery. All cooking and dining equipment is provided.
  • Please note that due to the diverse tastes of our guests, we are unable to accommodate individual dietary preferences on our group tours. The communal meals we provide depend on available produce, and in remote destinations, the selection of ingredients can sometimes be limited.
  • However, we do accommodate allergies as well as vegetarian and vegan requirements to ensure everyone has a suitable meal.
  • Sunway Safaris provides the following drinks: fruit juices at breakfast, as well as tea or coffee at breakfast and dinner. All other drinks must be purchased by you.
  • Sunway Safaris does not provide bottled drinking water.

Trip difficulty:

  • Anyone who is generally active and in good health should enjoy this trip.
  • A combination of simple accommodations ensures a comfortable tour.
  • A full program with some long drives, but also plenty of outdoor activity.
  • Everyone is asked to help out with the tour. In other words, if everyone spends a little time helping, the tour will run smoothly and everyone will have a great time. Participation is key.

What you should know:

  • All national park entrance fees are included.
  • You will need a valid passport and visas for entry into South Africa, eSwatini (Swaziland), and re-entry into South Africa. A detailed list of visa requirements can be found in the tour dossier, or you can contact your travel agent or Sunway Safaris.
  • Luggage: Please pack up to a 12 kg limit in a soft duffel bag. Also, bring a daypack for hikes and storage in the vehicle. For the "Accommodated & Classic Tours" safari level, all bedding is provided, so you do not need to bring a sleeping bag or pillow. Most accommodations provide towels, but it is always a good idea to bring a small travel towel for the beach or pool.
  • We recommend bringing a small amount of South African Rand for personal expenses on this trip. Please note that all foreign currency must be exchanged for South African Rand (ZAR), as shops, restaurants, and market vendors in South Africa (and eSwatini) only accept ZAR. Mastercard and Visa credit cards can also be used for restaurants, shops, and optional activities throughout the tour. You can find the approximate costs for drinks, meals, etc., in the Sunway tour dossier.

Frequently asked questions about this tour:

  1. Can I buy memory cards for my camera?
Memory cards and other camera accessories are available from time to time during the tour. We recommend a camera with a zoom lens ranging from wide-angle to telephoto (35-200mm) for landscape and wildlife photography. Each vehicle is equipped with a 12/24V cigarette lighter, but you should not rely on it for charging your batteries. We recommend bringing a spare battery. You can also charge your camera at the accommodations (South Africa 220V).
  2. Safety?
Like many other countries, South Africa has its challenges. Your tour guide will strive to show you the best sides of the country while remaining diligent about your safety. Stay alert, but don't be paranoid—then nothing will stand in the way of a great and unforgettable safari.
  3. Do I need malaria prophylaxis?
There is a limited risk of malaria in Mpumalanga, Eswatini, and Zululand (i.e., the first week of this tour). Please consult your doctor if you are unsure.
  4. What should I pack?
All details are listed in our general tour information (available at www.sunway-safaris.com). However, the essentials are:
  • Comfortable clothing for warm days and cold nights.
