Highlights of Namibia by tent and lodge

Today you make your way leisurely west from Halali through the heart of Etosha National Park. The journey itself becomes an extended safari as you pass numerous waterholes – favourite gathering places for antelope, zebras, giraffes and predators. Every hour on the road offers another window into the wild.

In the early afternoon you arrive at historic Okaukuejo Camp, beside one of the park’s most impressive permanent waterholes. Around dusk, elephants, rhinos and lions often gather here.

You leave Etosha National Park in a southwesterly direction and travel through the rugged hills of Damaraland, one of Namibia’s most striking regions. Along the way, there are opportunities to stop in small villages and at scenic viewpoints. A detour to the Petrified Forest or a visit to the Damara Living Museum offers fascinating insights into the region’s culture.

In the afternoon you reach beautifully situated Mowani Campsite, tucked among massive granite boulders. The views across the dramatic surrounding landscape are superb.

Nearby lies Twyfelfontein, home to a remarkable collection of prehistoric rock engravings. A guided walk introduces you to the symbolic world of this ancient rock art.

Today you leave the warm earth tones of Damaraland behind and continue west – a day of striking changes in scenery. The route leads through endless open spaces, past table mountains, dry riverbeds and small settlements such as Uis, where a short stop is worthwhile, not least for views of the imposing Brandberg, Namibia’s highest mountain.

The closer you get to the coast, the cooler the air becomes. Reaching the Atlantic opens up an entirely new horizon: Swakopmund welcomes you with fresh sea breezes and a lively town atmosphere.

Your accommodation is right by the ocean – perfect for a first stroll along the promenade or a relaxed arrival with sea views.

Today is all about your personal interests – Swakopmund is ideal for creating your own day. Choose between active adventures and cultural discoveries.

How about a catamaran cruise in Walvis Bay, where dolphins may play alongside the boat and seals sometimes come aboard? Alternatively, head into the golden dunes of the Namib on a quad-bike tour or try sandboarding.

If you prefer a slower pace, visit the Moon Landscape south of town, where ancient Welwitschia plants grow. Or explore the old town with its German colonial architecture, galleries and the Swakopmund Museum.

A second day on the Atlantic coast gives you even more options. You might join a guided township tour for insights into everyday life and Namibia’s cultural diversity.

A day trip to the seal colony at Cape Cross is another rewarding choice. Travel north along the rugged Skeleton Coast to where tens of thousands of Cape fur seals gather along the shore.

Alternatively, simply take it easy today. Swakopmund has plenty of cafés, bookshops and boutiques to browse, while the long beach is ideal for an extended walk.

After your days on the coast, you return inland and enter one of Namibia’s most extraordinary landscapes: the Namib Desert. The route follows the sometimes adventurous gravel roads of the C14, passing endless plains, rugged rock formations and the lonely expanses of the Namib.

A popular stop is Solitaire, a quirky desert settlement famous for its apple pie, old car wrecks and wonderful sense of remoteness.

In the afternoon you arrive at Sesriem Campsite, ideally located at the entrance to Sossusvlei. If you arrive early, there may still be time for a visit to nearby Sesriem Canyon.

You set off before sunrise, because the dunes of Sossusvlei are at their most magical in the early morning light. Famous dunes such as Dune 45 and Big Daddy glow in deep shades of red as the sun rises.

After climbing one of the dunes – or walking into the almost surreal Deadvlei – you return before the midday heat sets in.

You then continue east into the remote Naukluft Mountains, a spectacular area of deep gorges, natural pools and unusual flora. The afternoon leaves time for a short hike or a refreshing swim in a rock pool.

After the quiet moments in the rugged mountains of the Naukluft, you head for the capital today. The road takes you through the open landscapes of Namibia’s central highlands, past isolated farms, grazing kudu and perhaps even a giraffe on the horizon.

Shortly before reaching Windhoek, a stop in Rehoboth, a historic centre of the Baster community, is worthwhile.

Back in Windhoek, the stylish The Elegant Guesthouse awaits in leafy Klein Windhoek. Enjoy a relaxed final evening, perhaps with a stroll through the city centre or a sundowner in the guesthouse garden.

Today it is time to say goodbye to a country of wide-open skies, warm colours and memorable encounters. Depending on your flight time, there may still be time for a short stroll through town or one last cappuccino at a Windhoek café.

Your self-drive journey through Namibia ends with the drive to the airport, but memories of glowing dunes, star-filled nights and wild, welcoming landscapes will stay with you long after the flight home.
